ThRee-way methods
In Chemistry And Psychology
TRICAP'97

Lake Chelan, Washington, USA
May 4-9, 1997

The second TRICAP (ThRee-way methods In Chemistry and Psychology, formerly TRIC) meeting was held at Lake Chelan, Washington, USA May 4 through 9, 1997. The meeting focused on methods for analyzing 3-way and higher order data in the chemical sciences and psychology. The meeting was attended by 32 scientists from 14 countries, primarily from the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, psychology. As indicated on the Conference Schedule, 23 papers were presented along with 9 posters.

Goal of the Meeting

TRICAP brought together researchers from the fields of chemometrics and psychometrics. The goal was to provide a relaxed atmosphere where ideas could be freely exchanged. Successes and failures were discussed and opportunities for future research and applications were explored. The conference attempted to maintain a leisurely pace with plenty of time for presentation of materials and discussion. The was general agreement that the goals of the conference were largely met.

Location and Travel

TRICAP'97 was held at the Wapato Point Resort in Manson, Washington on the southeast end of Lake Chelan. Lake Chelan (Chelan means 'deep water') is an 88-km (55-mile) long glacier carved lake in the heart of the North Cascade Mountains, and is the third deepest lake in North America at 462 m (1500 feet) deep.

The economy of the area is primarily tourism and apple growing and the meeting was held during apple blossom, when the orchards surrounding the lake turn white and pink from the bloom. Several attendees of the meeting stayed for the Manson Apple Blossom Festival Parade after the meeting.

Most of the conference participants traveled through Seattle's SeaTac, the nearest major airport, a 3.5 hour drive from the conference location via Snoqualamie and Blewett Passes. An alternate, more scenic route from SeaTac is over Stevens Pass. This route takes around 4 hours. The truly adventurous returned to Seattle via the North Cascades Highway, which opened for the summer in the middle of TRICAP. This portion of the North Cascades Loop is recommended for its spectacular scenery, and it was truly great. Other conference participants flew into Wenatchee, the nearest commuter airport. Both United Airlines and Alaska/Horizon Air provide commuter service, an approximte 35 minute flight, from Seattle SeaTac Airport to Wenatchee's Pangborn Field. For those wishing to drive to Manson and the Wapato Point Resort they can expect an approximate 1 hour drive from Wenatchee's airport. There are several car rental agencies located at Pangborn.
