1) Upcoming Short Courses

Eigenvector is pleased to offer Process Chemometrics in Seattle, December 8-10, 1999. The course will be held at the
Silver Cloud Inn on Lake Union. This is our three-day, hands-on course for chemical engineers and process analytical
chemists. The course demonstrates the use of Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares (PLS)
regression in the process environment, along with a variety of more advanced techniques. Participants will work in pairs on computers provided using PLS_Toolbox. A brief introduction to MATLAB is included. For complete course info please see:

<http://www.eigenvector.com/Courses/SeattleInfo.html>

Eigenvector is tentatively planning a return to Chicago, March 13-17, 2000. We'll be offering two days of MATLAB
followed by three days of Process Chemometrics at Illinois Institute of Technology. If you want to really learn MATLAB as well as chemometrics, this is the course for you. Look for course details on our web site in the coming months.

Need chemometrics training at your site? Eigenvector has a rapidly expanding curriculum available. Besides our three day process chemometrics course, we also have courses that focus specifically on process monitoring, multi-way analysis, and the development of inferential sensors for use in process control. Write to bmw@eigenvector.com for more information.

2) PLS_Toolbox News

The latest update of PLS_Toolbox is 2.0.1c, which was released on April 21, 1999. The update made PLS_Toolbox
compatible with MATLAB 5.3. This is a free upgrade to PLS_Toolbox 2.0 users and can be download from our web site using your assigned username and password. Find out what version you are using by typing 'ver' at the MATLAB prompt. For more information on PLS_Toolbox 2.0, please see:

<http://www.eigenvector.com/PLS_Toolbox.html>

We're currently working on the next major update of PLS_Toolbox. The next version, PLS_Toolbox 2.5, will include
many refinements to PCA and PLS, an expanded set of multivariate image analysis tools, and a greatly enhanced and
expanded set of multi-way tools, including multi-way PLS. Expect to hear from us in the next 3-6 months!

3) iPLS Toolbox for Interval PLS

In spectral data sets (or other instances where the variables are logically ordered), interval PLS (iPLS) is useful for
determining the ranges of variables most useful for prediction. Local PLS models are developed on equidistant
subintervals of the full spectrum. It provides an overall picture of the relevant information in different spectral
subdivisions, thereby narrowing the important spectral variables.

iPLS Toolbox for MATLAB was developed by J. Wagner, A. Saudland and L. Nørgaard at The Royal Veterinary and
Agricultural University (KVL) in Copenhagen. The iPLS Toolbox requires PLS_Toolbox 2.0. You can download iPLS Toolbox at:

4) Corn NIR Spectra for Benchmarking Calibration Transfers

This data set consists of 80 samples of corn measured on three different NIR spectrometers. The oil, moisture, protein
and starch values for each of the samples is also included. In addition, an NBS standard glass was measured several times on each of the instruments. This is a great data set for benchmarking calibration transfer algorithms against each
other. The data was taken at Cargill and is distributed with their permission. Many thanks to Mike Blackburn there for
allowing us to publish it. You can download of copy of it as a MATLAB .mat file at:

5) Join the Chemometrics Society and/or the Discussion List

The North American/International Chemometrics Society (NAmICS) is dedicated to the advancement of the field of
chemometrics and the dissemination of information on the use of "chemometric" methods. Membership is free. Just send your address information to the membership secretary, David Lee Duewer at david.duewer@nist.gov. Be sure to include some info about your chemometrics interests. The main benefit of membership is the approximately quarterly newsletter. Members can also obtain a copy of the society roster and mailing list, which can be very handy when look for colleagues with similar interests or specific expertise.

The chemometrics discussion list, ICS-L is administrated by Tom O'Haver at University of Maryland. Members of the list can post announcements and discuss matters of concern to chemometricians. You can join ICS-L by sending the message

SUBSCRIBE ICS-L yournamehere

to: LISTSERV@umdd.umd.edu

Currently there are about 550 subscribers. Discussions tend to remain fairly directed toward problems of general concern. Volume on the list is a few messages a week.
