1) Upcoming Short Courses

If you are interested in multi-way methods such as PARAFAC, Tucker Models and multi-way PCA/PLS, then you should attend our one day course, Applied Multi-way Analysis, prior to the 6th Scandinavian Symposium on Chemometrics (SSC6) in Porsgrunn, Norway, August 15, 1999. We're teaching the course in conjunction with Rasmus Bro of KVL, Denmark. Info about the multi-way analysis course can be found at:

http://www.eigenvector.com/Courses

Eigenvector is offering Process Monitoring and Fault Detection Using Multivariate Methods in Vail, Colorado, September 11-12. The one and half day course will be held just prior to the SEMATECH AEC/APC Symposium. Emphasis will be on methods for batch monitoring applicable in semiconductor manufacturing. Complete course info is at:

2) PLS_Toolbox News

PLS_Toolbox 2.0.1c was released on April 21, 1999. The update makes PLS_Toolbox compatible with MATLAB 5.3. This is a free upgrade to PLS_Toolbox 2.0 users. The update can be downloaded from our web site (www.eigenvector.com) using your assigned username and password. If you are a PLS_Toolbox 2.0 user and don't have a username and password, we'd be happy to do it for you--just send your name and address information to helpdesk@eigenvector.com along with the serial number of your PLS_Toolbox (on the disk and inside the front cover of the manual) and we'll set you up.

If you are a registered PLS_Toolbox user, consider joining the PLS_Toolbox discussion list. The list provides a forum for discussing requests for improvements, applications, multivariate analysis in general, and specific PLS_Toolbox issues (Microsoftspeak for bugs). Registered users can join the list by sending a message with the word "subscribe" in the SUBJECT field to:

If you are teaching chemometrics in an academic setting, a PLS_Toolbox Class Kit can help give you a jump start. Copies of the toolbox for classroom use are $49 each (minimum order 10) and we include homework sets, solutions, and extra data sets. Of course, there are already lots of demos and data sets in the PLS_Toolbox that are useful for teaching. The manual includes an extensive chemometrics tutorial, which begins with an introduction to linear algebra, so its a great place for beginners to start. MATLAB plus PLS_Toolbox is THE way to really learn chemometrics.

3) Making MATLAB and PLS_Toolbox Work with Other Applications

MATLAB is a great tool, but until recently, getting data into and out of it was a time consuming and often frustrating experience. That's starting to change as applications get better at talking to each other. Below we've highlighted a number of ways that MATLAB, and thus PLS_Toolbox, can be used with data generated outside of MATLAB.

The MathWorks, Inc. provides several ways to get data in and out of MATLAB. This includes the Database Toolbox, Data Acquisition Toolbox, and Excel Link. There are also a number of third party products available that hook MATLAB to specific systems. For more information please see the following links:

Database Toolbox
Data Aquisition Toolbox
Excellink
Connections-Third Party Products

LabVIEW 5.1 can be linked to MATLAB with ActiveX. According to the National Instruments web site, "LabVIEW users can now call MATLAB M-Script files directly from LabVIEW VIs to facilitate the reuse of existing algorithms." For more information on LabVIEW, please see:

http://www.natinst.com/labview/

If you are involved in semiconductor manufacturing, then you've probably heard of Objectspace Catalyst Advanced Process Control (APC) software solution. Catalyst consists of software components that manage process control plans; collect data from process equipment and add-on sensors; invoke various process control applications/algorithms with this information; and update process models and modify/download recipe parameters as appropriate. Catalyst's Application Interface provides the appropriate interface environment to execute control plug-in applications such as MATLAB. Our Neal Gallagher (nealg@eigenvector.com) just got back from Catalyst training and is excited about the prospects. For more information, please see:

http://www.objectspace.com/products/catOverview.htm

OSI Software's PI System for collection and presentation of plant data can be integrated with other applications for advanced control and process modeling. PI can be linked to MATLAB through ActiveX. We've had some initial success with this approach here at Eigenvector. If you'd like to hook PI to PLS_Toolbox, please contact Neal Gallagher (nealg@eigenvector.com). For more information on PI, please visit OSI Software at:

4) Semiconductor Data for Fault Detection Benchmarking

Developing tool for process fault detection can be difficult, in part because it is often hard to find a real data set where you REALLY know what is normal and what isn't. Well, here's one where we do. This data is from a Lam 9600 Metal Etcher and was produced specifically to test fault detection algorithms. Process faults were intentionally put into the data through setpoint changes, then the data was adjusted to make the faults look as if sensors used in the control had developed a bias. The result is a data set that can be used to benchmark algorithms. The data was collected at Texas Instruments as part of the SEMATECH J-88E program. You can get your copy at:
