1) PLS_Toolbox News

PLS_Toolbox 3.5 is now available! Version 3.5 builds on the foundation of 3.0, with greatly improved ease-of-use and new state-of-the-art routines. This includes:

  • A single integrated point-and-click interface for PCA, PLS, PCR, SIMCA, PLS-DA, MCR and PARAFAC.
  • Integrated DataSet editor for viewing and editing data, adding and modifying labels, axis scales, and more ...
  • Tightly integrated help for use with MATLAB 7.
  • New routines for analysis of complex data sets such as LC/MS including CODA and CompareLCMS.
New purchases and upgrades can be obtained at: http://software.eigenvector.com/toolbox/3_5/OrderForm.php

Fully Functional PLS_Toolbox 3.5 Demos Available

Still not convinced PLS_Toolbox is the package for you? Try it out! We’ve made a fully functional (time expiring) demo available on-line. The demo gives you a month to use all the power of PLS_Toolbox 3.5. Get the demo here.

Teaching chemometrics this year? The extensive demos and expanded tutorials in PLS_Toolbox 3.5 make it better than ever for classroom use. University bookstores can order the manual (ISBN 0-9761184-0-8) and we'll supply students with a one-year PLS_Toolbox 3.5 license via download. We've also got extra homework and data sets for instructors. For more info, write to bmw@eigenvector.com.

2) Upcoming Short Courses for Fall 2004

Eigenvector will be teaching Chemometrics without Equations (CWE) and Introduction to Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) at three venues this fall: CAC-2004 in Lisbon, Portugal (September 18-19), FACSS-2004 in Portland, OR (October 4-7), and EAS-2004 in Somerset, NJ (November 14-17). Get more information on the CWE course, or more information on the MIA course. You can always find our current offerings on our short course page.

Need chemometrics training at your site? Eigenvector has a rapidly expanding curriculum available. In addition to the courses listed above, we have courses that focus specifically on process monitoring, inferential sensors for use in process control, and multi-way analysis. Write to bmw@eigenvector.com for more information.

3) PLS_Toolbox User Tip: Working with the New DataSet Editor

Previous versions of PLS_Toolbox made use of DataSet Objects (DSOs) as a convenient way to hold data and their related scales, labels, class assignments, etc. all in one internally consistent MATLAB object. New to PLS_Toolbox 3.5, the DataSet Editor provides quick and easy access to the data table and the associated fields in a DSO.

As an example, here are several ways to modify the labels fields in a DSO. Start the DataSet Editor by typing "editds"
at the command window or through many of the other PLS_Toolbox GUIs.

  • Directly edit the field: With the DataSet Editor you can navigate to the mode of interest (e.g. the "Mode 1 Labels"
tab takes you to sample labels) and simply make any changes you wish by clicking on a value and modifying it.
  • Cut and Paste from Outside Sources: Using standard Copy and Paste commands, you can copy data from one program (such as Microsoft Excel), navigate in the DataSet Editor to the appropriate "Mode Labels" tab, select the field button (button on top of each column) in which the copied information should go, then select Edit/Paste. If the copied information is appropriate in length, it will be pasted into the selected field.
  • Load from Workspace: If you have the desired field contents already loaded into MATLAB as a standard variable, you can select the appropriate field button (as described above) and choose File/Load <Field> where <Field> is the selected field: Labels, Axis Scale, Class, or Include. In the dialog box, simply locate the variable and click "load".
  • Load from an Existing DataSet: If you have an existing DSO with labels you want to use, you can tell the DataSet Editor to extract them following the exact same steps as "Load from File". This always copies from the same field name and same mode of the selected source DataSet object.

The steps above apply equally to any of the fields in the "Mode Labels" tabs (e.g. "Label", "Axis Scale", "Class", or "Include"). Remember to save your modified DataSet object (using File/Save) when you are done modifying it! Here's another hint: Many of these commands can also be accessed by right-clicking (control-click on MAC) the field button at the top of each column.

For more information on the DSO, see the DataObject.pdf documentation that came with your PLS_Toolbox or the DataSet Object page.

4) Get Your Free Eigenvector Coffee Mug at FACSS or EAS

Eigenvector will be at the FACSS and EAS exhibitions to show off PLS_Toolbox 3.5 and talk about our chemometrics training and consulting work. Be one of the first 50 people to visit us at our booth and mention EigenNews and you'll get one of our new coffee mugs. They're cobalt blue outside, white inside and have our ultra-cool (techno-nerd) logo on them. You’ll be très chic (très geek) with your café Americano in one of these!

6) How did I get on this list?

If you are on this list, it means that you have corresponded with us, gone to one of the same meetings, or have published information about yourself (such as a web page) suggesting that you have an interest in chemometrics, analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, or chemical process modeling and monitoring. In other words, we had some reason to believe that you might actually be interested in receiving this newsletter.
