1) Upcoming Short Courses

"Chemometrics: Focus on Mass Spectroscopy" will be offered
prior to the American Society for Mass Spectroscopy's Sanibel
Conference, on Sanibel Island, Florida, January 19, 2001.
Registration is being handled by the conference organizers.
For more information contact ASMS at 505.989.4517, e-mail:
asms@asms.org, or visit the conference web site.

Escape the winter doldrums and join us in Tempe, Arizona, for
our third annual spring MATLAB and Process Chemometrics
Courses! The courses will be taught back to back at the
Embassy Suites, March 26-30, 2001. The hands-on courses may
be taken together or separately. The MATLAB course (March 26-
27) is intended for beginning to intermediate users who would
like to apply MATLAB more effectively in general scientific
and engineering problems. Process Chemometrics (March 28-30)
is aimed at process engineers and process analytical chemists
who would like to utilize their data more effectively. For
complete info please see the course description.

Need chemometrics training at your site? Eigenvector has a
rapidly expanding curriculum available. Besides our MATLAB
and Process Chemometrics courses, we also have courses that
focus specifically on process monitoring, multi-way analysis,
inferential sensors for use in process control, multivariate
image analysis and SIMULINK. Write to bmw@eigenvector.com for
more information.

2) PLS_Toolbox News

PLS_Toolbox 2.1 for MATLAB 6.0 is now available. It was
released on November 20, 2000. The main focus of the update
was assuring compatibility with MATLAB 6.0, but we've also
made some improvements and added new features. This includes
enhanced support for exchanging data with spreadsheet
applications, improvements to the PCA and PLS GUIs, and
additional multivariate image analysis routines. PLS_Toolbox
2.1 also maintains compatibility with MATLAB versions 5.2
through 5.3.1. This is a free upgrade to registered
PLS_Toolbox 2.0 users and can be downloaded from our web site
using your assigned username and password. See the
PLS_Toolbox home page for more info.

3) DataSet Standard Data Object for use with MATLAB

MATLAB supports a variety of data types such as double
arrays, structures and cell arrays. Until now, however, there
has been no standard way to associate all the parts of a data
set that go together, including the sample and variable
labels, class variables, time and wavelength axes, etc. In
order to facilitate data set handling, Eigenvector has created
the DataSet Standard Data Object. When added to a MATLAB
installation, DataSet creates a new object in MATLAB that
integrates all of the separate components associated with a
data set into a single variable in the MATLAB workspace.

We're making the DataSet object freely available, and hope
that MATLAB users everywhere will use it when writing
routines that are data intensive. Existence of the object
will greatly enhance the exchange of data sets, the
translation of data sets between file types (such as JCAMP)
and the handling of data sets within MATLAB. Future versions
of PLS_Toolbox will take full advantage of the DataSet
object. For more information on DataSet, please contact Neal
Gallagher (nealg@eigenvector.com). Comments an ideas would be
especially appreciated. To download DataSet, go to the
DataSet page.

4) Spectroscopy Accessory Pack for The Unscrambler®

Eigenvector Research has teamed up with CAMO to develop add-
on tools for The Unscrambler. Our first effort is the
Spectroscopy Accessory Pack (AP), which is being released
this week. The Spectroscopy AP includes several important
tools for spectroscopists including instrument
standardization and calibration transfer routines, spectral
smoothing via explicit deresolution and orthogonal signal
correction. To find out more about the Spectroscopy AP for
The Unscrambler please contact bmw@eigenvector.com or go to
The Unscrambler Accessory Pack page.

5) New Eigenvector Logo and Web Site

We'd like to thank Chris Raines, owner of Sun Graphic Design
Labs, for the great redesign of our logo and web site. Our
new logo emphasizes our relationship with data: a Greek
lambda, common notation for eigenvalues in eigenvector
problems, is superimposed over a matrix, the most basic unit
of data we deal with. On our web site you'll notice that
navigation has been improved. If you haven't visited us in a
while drop by and have a look.

Got a web site of your own that needs a facelift? Find out
more about Sun Graphic Design Labs.
